Dear Future Bruin…

Hi Bruins!

I am Nalaniya Wilson, a 3rd year political science major from San Antonio, Texas and a New Student Advisor (Blue). In addition to this, I am a second year dancer on UCLA’s first ever HBCU-inspired Danceline: The Elegant Bruinettes.

I grew up hearing a lot of “5, 6, 7, 8’s.” As a dancer, it’s important to count like this before beginning your choreography so you start on time.

I began dancing at the age of 15 on my high school’s dance/drill team. At the time, I joined simply because I wanted to try something new. From a young age, I had a love for music and dance, but at that time, I decided that I wanted to take this passion more seriously. I quickly fell in love with dance and found myself as the head captain just by my second year performing with the team.

When I committed to UCLA, I assumed that this dance chapter of my life was coming to an end. Between academics, work, and the challenges of transitioning to a large out-of-state university, I never imagined I would continue dancing, but my future had other plans in store for me.

While I was fully expecting to not dance for an organized team during college, I still searched for opportunities to engage in dance at UCLA because it was something I enjoyed doing. During my first year at UCLA, I chose to join the Nigerian Student Association Dance Team. I danced a full year on the team where I participated in performances, competitions, and danced for the organization’s annual culture show before transitioning to dancing for the Elegant Bruinettes my second year.

Being a Bruinette has been one of the greatest highlights of my time at UCLA. We have had the privilege of performing at all UCLA home football as well as basketball games – men and women – with UCLA’s incredible Solid Gold Sound Marching Band.

It took me some time to fully integrate onto the team as an out-of-state student. I often questioned my abilities as a dancer due to my late start. On top of this, I struggled to navigate late rehearsals, back-to-back performances, class work, my job, and learning a new style of dance. It was a major adjustment for me, considering where I came from.

Over time, I was able to find my place as a dancer on the team, thanks to my teammates, who I call my sisters. I’ve built stronger dance skills, time management, patience, and life long friendships. I’ve been able to enjoy dancing with our band, spread joy and school spirit, and promote HBCU/African American culture through my favorite hobby – dance.

Balancing school, work as a NSA, and dance can be challenging, but thankfully, many of the skills I’ve gained through my time as a Bruinette have translated over to my role as an NSA. Time management has become one of my most valuable skills, and I’m learning how important it is to stay organized and prioritize what matters most. Additionally, being a Bruinette has allowed me to connect with students and families more effectively, as I am constantly engaging with large crowds and fans when I perform at games. I’ve learned the importance of hard work and never giving up even when things seem hard. While my schedule is often busy, dance provided an outlet that keeps me grounded and connected to a supportive community.

As an out-of-state student, finding spaces where I feel a sense of belonging has been incredibly meaningful. The Elegant Bruinettes, along with my position as an NSA, have provided me with an environment that allows me to be myself while connecting with others along the way.
