Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE)
Because proficiency in English composition is important to successful performance in many courses, the UC Entry Level Writing requirement must be satisfied before entering or during your first year at UCLA. It is possible that you have satisfied the requirement through exams; please visit the UCLA Writing Programs – AWPE page to learn more.
If you have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement, you will need to take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE), which will be given online on the following date:
- Thursday, July 6th, 2023 (for students attending New Student Sessions 104, 105, and 106): Exam will be given online from 9AM to 12PM on BruinLearn
In order to enroll in the appropriate English Composition course for CSI, you must take the exam on the date recommended for the session you plan to attend. If you don’t, you may not be able to take a writing course during CSI.
Click the link above to register to take the AWPE. Once you have filled out the online registration form, you will receive an email with a link to the BruinLearn exam website and information about the exam.
The cost of the exam is $104, which will be charged to your Bruinbill after you have successfully completed and submitted all parts of the exam.
If you need special accommodations because of a documented disability, register with UCLA’s Center for Accessible Education (CAE). Go to this link to learn how to apply for an accommodation. NOTE: CAE takes up to 2 weeks to review requests, so please submit your registration to CAE in a timely manner.
QUESTIONS VIA MYUCLA MESSAGE CENTER
Chemistry Diagnostic Test
If you enroll in Chemistry 14A for CSI you must take the online Chemistry Diagnostic Test.
The exam will be available online beginning May 1, 2023. Please complete the exam before July 1, 2023 so that your placement recommendation will be available at New Student Session 105. There is no charge for taking this examination and the results are advisory, not mandatory.
Math Diagnostic Test
Students who selected Math 31A for their CSI course are required to have the proper placement through the Math Diagnostic Test. This is an online exam offered through the Math department and must be taken before July 1, 2023. There is a fee of $20 fee (non-refundable) to take the exam.
For more information on the exam and instructions on how to take the exam online, please check the Math Diagnostic Test website .
All CSI students are encouraged to attend a Welcome Dinner and reception beginning at 6:00 pm on July 31st . Following the welcome, you will have a social event in Westwood Village.
Some of the other planned activities include trips to the beach, Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade and the Getty Museum. These, combined with many activities planned on the UCLA campus, will give you more opportunities for exploration and socializing outside of your courses in the College Summer Institute.
To participate in these social events, you will need to fill out a waiver of liability. If you are under 18 years of age, your parents will need to sign the form.
When you register for CSI, NSAP will arrange for your housing during the program. Do not fill out a separate application or housing contract for summer term.
All CSI students will live in either deluxe residence hall or residential suite- the specific building has not been determined as of 3/17/23. Restrooms are cleaned on a daily basis. All UCLA residence halls are co-ed, but each room will be gender-specific.
Special Considerations for Housing
We plan rooms and roommates based on gender identity as selected on MyUCLA. If your gender identity is different than your gender on record and you would like a room in the residence halls based on your gender identity, please contact our office.
If you have a permanent or temporary disability, or a need which may require advance arrangements, please contact our office.
Staying After CSI – “Stay-through”
CSI students who wish to stay in on-campus housing after CSI has concluded and before campus move-in begins may do so for an additional fee. The cost is $335 for the 5 days before move-in, including meals.
When you sign up for CSI, you will have the option of choosing to add the Stay-through option. The deadline for signing up for (or removing) “stay-through” is Friday, August 25th. Any changes after this time will result in a $50 late change fee.
See Housing for more information.
UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP)
Students must maintain sufficient health insurance coverage through September 25, 2023 in order to participate in CSI. As such, students will be automatically enrolled in the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP), a comprehensive medical insurance program offered to UCLA students at a prorated fee, reflecting the CSI duration. UC SHIP coverage includes medical, vision, dental, behavioral health and pharmaceutical care.
All CSI students will pay $36.52 for access to Counseling and Psychological Services and Ashe Student Health Center during CSI.
UCSHIP coverage is $436.35. Students with sufficient health coverage can request a waiver of UCSHIP. That process will be available June 1 – July 21 online. Links will be posted here via email to registered CSI students.

Despite gates that are left open at many lots and structures around campus, you should never park without a proper permit. Parking officers will ticket vehicles without valid permits.
Daily permits can be purchased for $14, with most lots having a pay station. Visitors can also pay on their phone; follow instructions posted at the parking lots.
If you would like to bring a vehicle to campus for CSI, you would need a parking permit to park on campus. To apply for and receive a permit, you must apply online with UCLA Transportation. (A permit to park during CSI will not transfer to academic year parking.)
Ride Service (e.g. Lyft or Uber)
Ride service applications such as Uber and Lyft are authorized at Los Angeles (LAX) and Burbank (BUR) airports. At LAX, you will need to take a shuttle for LAXIT, the designated pick up location for rideshare services.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available at various pick-up points labeled “Taxi” outside of the baggage claim area at all local airports. Taxis to UCLA from LAX generally cost about $45 each way.
Public Transportation
Several buses pick up and drop off at the UCLA campus. For more information, visit UCLA Transportation Services.
Directions to give to drivers
If you are taking a ride service from any of the Los Angeles area airports, please inform the driver that you are going to UCLA’s Sunset Village (the parking designated for the residence halls). The driver should leave you as close to the residence hall as possible, preferably in the Sunset Village parking lot. The street address is 330 De Neve Drive, Los Angeles.
Please note: there are 2 airports in the vicinity of UCLA: Los Angeles International (LAX) and Hollywood Burbank (BUR), but students travel through LAX the most.
All CSI residential students will live in a campus resident hall. The following items will be provided:
- Bed with bedding (including a blanket)
- Towel and washcloth
- Pillow
- Closet (no hangers)
- Desk
- Chest of drawers
Though some linens are provided, students are responsible for washing their linens.
What you should bring to CSI will be similar to what you would bring for the academic year. If you plan on staying after CSI concludes, keep in mind that you will need to change rooms. All other CSI participants must be prepared to move out at the conclusion of CSI.
Review Housing’s guidelines for what you can’t bring .
To register for CSI and participate in social events which may be off-campus, you will need to review and agree to the Waiver of Liability. If you are under 18 years of age when CSI starts, you will be emailed a form for your parents or guardians to complete which you will need to bring to the program.
To complete your registration for CSI you will also need to read and agree to the CSI Participant Agreement. If you are under 18 years of age when CSI starts, you will be emailed an agreement for your parents or guardians to complete which you will need to bring to the program.
(Paper copies of both forms will be available at check-in, but your parent or guardian will also need to be present if you are under 18.)
