All CSI residential students will live in Sproul Landing residential hall. The following items will be provided:
- Bed with bedding (including a blanket)
- Towel and washcloth
- Closet (no hangers)
- Chest of drawers
Though some linens are provided, students are responsible for washing their linens.
What you should bring to CSI will be similar to what you would bring for the academic year. If you plan on staying after CSI concludes, keep in mind that you will need to change rooms. All other CSI participants must be prepared to move out at the conclusion of CSI..
Review Housing’s guidelines for what you can’t bring .
One option to help you get from a local airport to the UCLA campus is SuperShuttle, a shared van service. One-way fare to UCLA from LAX is about $25.00. After you arrive at the airport, go to the SuperShuttle sign located on the outer island under the Shared Ride sign.
Ride Service (e.g. Lyft or Uber)
Ride service applications such as Uber and Lyft are authorized at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). You will need to order a pick up from one of their designated spaces at the departure level of LAX.
Taxis are readily available at various pick-up points labeled “Taxi” outside of the baggage claim area at all local airports. Taxis to UCLA from LAX generally cost about $45 each way.
Several buses pick up and drop off at the UCLA campus. For more information, visit UCLA Transportation Services .
Directions to give to drivers
If you are taking a ride service from any of the Los Angeles area airports, please inform the driver that you are going to UCLA’s Sunset Village (the area in which Sproul Landing is located). The driver should leave you as close to the residence hall as possible, preferably in the Sunset Village parking lot. The street address is 330 De Neve Drive, Los Angeles.
Please note: there are 2 airports in the vicinity of UCLA: Los Angeles International (LAX) and Hollywood Burbank (BUR), but students travel through LAX the most.
Check-in takes place on Monday, July 30, from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in front of Covel Commons. You can check in at any time during that period. If you arrive after 5:00 pm you will have access to check-in to your room but will miss activities; however, please arrive before orientation activities begin the next day.
Students who need to take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) should arrive before 12:00 pm to settle in before taking the exam, which is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. that day.
Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE)
The AWPE will be held 4:00-6:00 pm, July 30, 2018. Please bring a picture ID, pen/pencil, and your payment receipt for the exam. If you are unsure whether you need to take this exam, please contact our office.
To pay and obtain your receipt for the AWPE, go to the AWPE website and click on “Pay here if taking exam on UC Campus.” Follow the instructions and print the receipt. Bring the receipt to the exam. The fee is $110.
Math Diagnostic Test
Students who selected Math 31A for their CSI course are required to have the proper placement through the Math Diagnostic Test. This is an online exam offered through the Math department and must be taken before July 1, 2018.
All CSI students are encouraged to attend a Welcome Dinner and reception beginning at 6:00 pm on July 30th. Following the welcome, you will have a social event in Westwood Village.
Some of the other planned activities include trips to the beach, Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade and the Getty Museum. These, combined with many activities planned on the UCLA campus, will give you more opportunities for exploration and socializing outside of your courses in the College Summer Institute.
To participate in these social events, you will need to fill out a waiver of liability. If are under 18 years of age, your parents will need to sign the form.
Despite gates that are left open at many lots and structures around campus, you should never park without a proper permit. Parking officers will ticket vehicles without valid permits.
Daily permits can be purchased for $12, with most lots having a pay station.
If you would like to bring a vehicle to campus for CSI, you would need a parking permit to park on campus. To apply for and receive a permit, you must apply online with UCLA Transportation. (A permit to park during CSI will not transfer to academic year parking.)
When you register for CSI, NSTP will arrange for your housing during the program. Do not fill out a separate application or housing contract for summer term.
All CSI students will live in Sproul Landing. Sproul Landing is a deluxe residence hall, meaning it has air conditioning and separate community restrooms and showers for men and women. Restrooms are cleaned on a daily basis. All UCLA residence halls are co-ed, but each room will be gender-specific.
Special Considerations for Housing
We plan rooms and roommates based on gender identity as selected on MyUCLA. If your gender identity is different than your gender on record and you would like a room in the residence halls based on your gender identity, please contact our office.
If you have a permanent or temporary disability, or a need which may require advance arrangements, please contact our office.
Staying After CSI – “Stay-through”
CSI students who wish to stay in on-campus housing after CSI has concluded and before campus move-in begins may do so for an additional fee. The cost is $275 for the 5 days before move-in, including meals.
When you sign up for CSI, you will have the option of choosing to add the Stay-through option. The deadline for signing up for (or removing) “stay-through” is Friday, August 24th. Any changes after this time will result in a $50 late change fee.
UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP)
Students must maintain sufficient health insurance coverage through September 23, 2018 in order to participate in CSI. As such, students will be automatically enrolled in the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP), a comprehensive medical insurance program offered to UCLA students at a prorated fee, reflecting the CSI duration. UC SHIP coverage includes medical, vision, dental, behavioral health and pharmaceutical care.
Those students who already have insurance coverage comparable to UC SHIP and do not want to keep UC SHIP must submit an online UC SHIP waiver application by July 27, 2018 (The waiver application is not open yet; when it is available the link will be provided here). Submission of the waiver application does not guarantee that UC SHIP enrollment will be waived. Unless waiver application is approved, the student will remain enrolled in UC SHIP and will be responsible for the UC SHIP fee.
In addition to UC SHIP charges, all CSI students will be assessed the user fees for the UCLA Arthur Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center and the UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services. These user fees may not be waived under any circumstances, even if the UC SHIP waiver request is approved.
For CSI students enrolled in UC SHIP, the insurance coverage dates are July 30 – September 23, 2018. However, students will not be eligible for services outside of the Ashe Center, Bruin Health Pharmacy, and CAPS until all CSI fees are paid in full.
Regardless of the UC SHIP enrollment status, all CSI students can access services provided by the UCLA Arthur Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center and UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services on a fee for service basis.
The UCLA Arthur Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center (Ashe Center) will be the primary health facility where students will initiate their healthcare needs. For psychological services, the UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will the first appointment students should make.
